It’s Day 6 of Seafood week and it’s been great to see this industry celebrating in style!
Seafood week is all about raising awareness about the different variety of fish out there and the health benefits that come with including them in our diets.
So, who could be better than industry veteran and our #SeafoodHero Mark Drummond from Towngate Fisheries to talk us through them!
What are the key health benefits of eating the recommended 2 portions of fish a week?
Some of the benefits of eating two portions of fish per week:
Fish is low in fat and high in protein.
It lowers risk of heart attack, heart disease, cholesterol, stroke, depression, diabetes and Alzheimer’s.
It increases levels of Omega-3 in your body which leads to healthy skin, hair, nails and improves sleep.
It boosts your mood and maintains brain functioning.
Why are Fish & Chips important as part of a balanced diet?
A balanced diet doesn’t have to include fish & chips, but it most certainly can! Many people have a perception that because fish & chips are deep fried they must be unhealthy, but this is far from the case. If properly cooked fish & chips are not high in fat and a reasonable size portion should be under 1000 calories. Many fish & chip shops now offer a smaller “lite bite” portion that should be around 600 calories. Although it’s recommended, we all eat 2 portions of fish a week, many of us don’t. The average is just 1.2 portions a week, but as fish & chips are one of the most popular (and convenient) ways to eat fish, including fish & chips at least once a week in your diet is a very easy (and tasty) way to increase your fish consumption.
What will you be doing to celebrate seafood week?
