Interview with industry veteran Michael Rhodes from Superfish
In this week’s blog we speak to industry veteran Michael Rhodes from Superfish! He talks to us about his long and successful career in the industry. Michael has gone from helping with the washing up when he was 8 to eventually taking over the reins.
How did you get into the Fish & Chip industry?
I just followed the footsteps of my Father really. When I was 8, I used to go in and help with the washing up on a Saturday, by the time I was 14 I was helping all weekend and serving customers.
How long have you been in this industry?
Too long! I’ve been in the industry for 42 years now.
What advice would you give to someone in their 1st year?
This last year in my opinion has been the hardest yet. All I would say is get your margins right and pay attention to customer service and you should be ok.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
I enjoy it all. The variety of challenges that come with this job keeps it fresh.
What’s your greatest accomplishment?
We reached the finals for multiple shops in the National Fish & Chip Awards a few years ago but I’d say my greatest accomplishment has to be staying in business all these years with so many shops too!
Why did you choose Florigo?
I was impressed with the extraction technology. I’ve always had wall ranges so good extraction was important to me. I also wanted a range with faster pans with good gas efficiency and a Florigo range gives that to you.
How does frying on a Florigo benefit your business?
I would say one of the main benefits is that it gives you a consistent product, which is important in this industry.
What’s your favourite memory of Superfish?
There are so many! You’re always going to look back to the days gone by, but Superfish have given me so many memories, I’m just happy to have been doing this for so long.
What does the future hold for Superfish?
It’s been a challenging few years in this industry, I look forward to the challenges ahead and continuing to go forward successfully.
